According to Time Magazine, summer learning loss – referred to as “the summer slide” – is a major contributing factor in the achievement gap in America’s schools. Nehemiah Inc sees this trend in its own surrounding neighborhood. During the summer months, children have working parents and tons of unstructured time and often need a little help staying in line and keeping their brains fit. Moreover, an astounding 98% of the children in Nehemiah’s neighborhood are eligible for free or reduced lunch. Thus, it is imperative that families in the community have access to quality and affordable education, food programs and exposure to positive activities that expand worldview.

As a result, Nehemiah, Inc. runs a summer youth learning camp for children grades K5 – 7th each year. Summer job opportunities are also offered to teens and college students (ages 14-21) to serve as assistant teachers and recreation assistants. This summer job opportunity is offered in collaboration with the City of Milwaukee Earn and Learn program.  Click HERE to learn more about the application deadline.

Nehemiah’s Summer Youth Learning Camp emphasizes reading and math enrichment and our curriculum is based on state standards and taught by Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction’s certified teachers. We also offer other experiences such as guest speakers, personal development activities, arts, and cultural projects, sports and field trips. Every student receives breakfast, lunch and a snack each day.
